The connection between these three pieces, is that although the mechanics of war has evolved over the last two centuries, the brutality and the horrific nature of war have remained constant. The three works of art each display and are targeted towards a different war, Advice to a Raven from Russia is referring to Napoleon's campaign in Russia, Gassed is depicting a scene from WWI, and War is exploring the many negative aspects of all wars but more specifically the Vietnam War. However, Starr's lyrics, " War...I despise because it means destruction," clearly applies to all three wars. The scene of the dead bodies in Gassed, and the dead soldiers written about in Barlow's poem, also resonate with Starr's words that " war is a friend only to an undertaker."
